The wait is over for Mac users–last week, Amazon released its Kindle for Mac, so Apple computer owners can now enjoy the (for now at least) low prices of ebooks from the Kindle store.
But wait there’s more! Today Amazon previewed its Kindle app for the forthcoming Apple iPad, which offers color photos embedded within the text and fancy page-turning animation.

Here’s hoping this is a glimpse at where Kindle books, magazines, and newspapers will be heading in the next year or so; after all, only the original Kindle is stuck in a grayscale world, while every other device can easily display color.

I’m a bit confused as to why you say that no other Kindle variant offers the color photos embedded within the text. All other non-Kindle hardware versions display the photos and illustrations in the same way that the iPad/tablet app presents it. Just look at the promo for the Mac application — it’s showing the same photo displayed in the same way (although wider page width).
The biggest difference between the iPad/tablet app and other variants lie within the page flips and the home screen (which also changes based on time of day).

@Timothy: You’re right, I overlooked that entirely. I’ve just tested a photo book on Kindle for PC and Kindle for iPhone and color photos appear as you described. I’ve updated the post.
Where did you find the information about the home screen changing based on the time of day? Is there a video demo somewhere I can embed for readers?
Thanks – Chris
