Kindle – 3rd Generation

Kindle Leather Cover

Amazon’s in-house cover has improved greatly since its first version in 2007. The K3 model has a stitched leather exterior and microfiber interior, and a metal latch on the inside spine that invisibly secures your Kindle. The $60 model has an extendable LED light that draws power from your Kindle when connected. Comes in seven different colors.

Kindle Leather Cover – $35

M-Edge GO! Jacket

A simple faux-leather case. Elastic straps on all four corners hold the Kindle in place, but it’s not as elegant a solution as the hidden latch mechanism in the Amazon version. So long as this case remains at $35, I’d suggest you go with Amazon’s at the same price, unless you just hate the pebbled exterior of the Amazon model. Comes in pink, purple, and brown as well as black.

M-Edge Trip Canvas Jacket

The Trip jacket is essentially the same as the GO! above, except this one is made of canvas and includes an elastic strap that holds the cover shut. Comes in navy and pink as well as black.

M-Edge Executive Jacket

Like the other M-Edge jackets, the Executive uses a four-corner strap system to hold the Kindle in place. This model has a strap to hold the case shut, and it’s wider than the other cases and includes an interior pocket for papers. Like the GO! above, it’s covered in faux-leather. Comes in five colors.

M-Edge Cambridge Jacket

My favorite of the M-Edge line of jacket cases, the slightly boxy, retro Cambridge combines canvas and leather for the exterior, and wool twill for the interior. It also features an interior pocket made of leather. There’s a hidden magnet in the case to keep it open when folded back. Comes in brown or black.

kate spade new york

At $85, I can’t recommend the Kate Spade canvas covers (although there are even more expensive models on Amazon if you’ve got cash to burn). Still, these literary-themed canvas jackets are nicely designed. The three covers mimic old-fashioned paperbacks, and the case uses a metal spine latch similar to the one in Amazon’s own case.

Kindle – 2nd Generation

M-Edge Platform Jacket

This synthetic leather case flips open along the top edge, which lets it also work as a stand to prop up your Kindle for easy hands-free reading. It’s a bit wider than the Kindle in order to make room for an optional battery-operated light (sold separately by M-Edge). At $30, it’s also one of the cheaper options.

Speck DustJacket

One of the most affordable faux-leather cases available, the DustJacket is solidly built but nondescript. On the other hand, it’s one of the only cases with a built-in stand for hands free reading. Check out my review for more details.

M-Edge GO! Jacket

One of the thinnest padded leather cases you’ll find for under $50. If you want a slightly nicer version of the default Amazon case, try this one.

M-Edge Halsea

Made from laminated canvas and leather, this case is fairly generic apart from the stylish patterns on the outside. If you want an attractive, protective case that’s conservatively fashion-foward, you might like it.

M-Edge Icon

I’d call it gaudy; M-Edge calls it stylish, and maybe you agree. These shiny patent leather cases make your Kindle stand out. Like a purse.
