Want your Kindle case to stand out from the others? Try a unique handmade case.

Byrd & Belle

This Minneapolis artist handcrafts sophisticated felt and leather cases for portable devices. By default, the cases are designed for the iPad, but you can custom-request one for your Kindle for the same price. She writes, “Contact me to set up an order.”

Simple Sleeve – $32 + $6 shipping.
Sleeve w/Clasp – $48 + $6 shipping.

ReBindIt

I wrote about this company earlier this summer because I love what they do with discarded old books. At $15-22 (plus shipping), they’re also one of the most affordable case options I’ve found.

If you’re looking for something strange, one-of-a-kind, and loaded with character, be sure to check them out.

Elizabeth David Design

These handmade fabric cases come in a huge variety of looks, and the inventory changes frequently. The cases come with clasps and lots of interior pockets to hold extra papers or small notebooks.

Mostly $34-50 + ~$5 shipping.

Oberon Design

These hand-tooled leather covers are probably the best looking options on the market, at least if you like hand-tooled leather and designs that draw heavily from nature. Teleread calls this case “simply gorgeous.” Here’s another review of both the strap and the velcro versions.

BorsaBella Fabric Bags

This Etsy storefront sells custom-made fabric bags and sleeves for your Kindle.

Vintagecovers

These handmade retro cases are essentially the outer covers of old books. The spines are reinforced, and four elastic corner straps are riveted to the back to hold your device securely in place. Unfortunately most of the cases have the straps spaced for Kobo and Sony Reader so the Kindle won’t fit securely, but there are some unfinished options you can ask to be Kindle-ized. The artist who makes them writes, “If you don’t see something you like, please email me as I have a large stock of inventory and welcome custom orders.”

Prices range from $23-50 + $6 shipping (from Canada to the U.S.).

Strangedog.com

Strangedog covers are hand-made by one guy, and each one is unique. Because of that, they’re always sold out when you visit his online store. The good news is that even though they’re custom made and one-of-a-kind, they’re cheaper than most of the “professional” cases on the market. The even better news is you can custom order a case with fabric that you choose and ship to him, provided he has the time to handle your request. If you want something that’s truly unique, this is the most affordable way to go.

If you’re really feeling that you want a unique, personalized Strangedog case, you can design and print your own fabric at Spoonflower.com and use that for the cover.

Oak and Brass Charging/Sync Stand

OldTimeComputer.com makes custom wood and metal enclosures that turn your modern devices into something that looks like it belongs in a Victorian steampunk adventure, or maybe Wild Wild West. The ereader stand, however, is subtle enough that it can disappear into pretty much any décor. More info in this post.
