Want to read Austen or Dostoyevsky on your Kindle without paying a cent? Morris Rosenthal of Foner Books has put together a mega list of free classics available on the Amazon Kindle store:

It’s a great starting point if you want to avoid get-rich-quick publishers who post the same classics for a price, especially since the paid versions sometimes appear first in the results of a standard Kindle store search.
I often forget that not everyone knows you can get ebook versions of many classics for free elsewhere on the web. But even if you know about Feedbooks or Project Gutenberg, you might not be willing to visit those sites if you can find the book on the Amazon Kindle store, especially since a Kindle purchase will automatically sync between your Kindle devices.
However, as Rosenthal points out in his related post, there’s one key thing to remember when looking for free classics on the Kindle store: just because it’s not available there for free doesn’t mean it’s not available elsewhere for free. In other words, it’s in your financial best interests to at least use Feedbooks and Project Gutenberg as fallback sources.

I am making my way through a long list of must-read classics and the Kindle has been wonderful to help me with my goal. I especially enjoy the shorter works by Austen, Eliot, etc. Without the Kindle I’m not sure I would have picked them up. I am making good progress on my TBR list – http://www.jennascribbles.com/books-and-ebooks/a-list-of-must-read-classics/
Lots of must read classics to go!
