LivingSocial offering $20 Amazon gift card for $10 today only

Update: this deal has expired!

LivingSocial, a GroupOn knockoff (only in 2011 can I write a sentence like that and have it make any sense), is offering a pretty awesome deal today for Kindle customers: a $20 Amazon.com gift card for $10.

I like bad news, so let’s get that out of the way first. You have to register with LivingSocial to take advantage of the offer, and that means providing your name, email and mailing address, which I’m sure will be used for advertising in some form or another in the future. You’ll also have to pay the $10 with a credit card.

Also, like all GroupOn-style offers it’s dangerously easy to overvalue it because of how it’s presented. Remember that essentially it’s just a $10 bonus credit if you agree to spend at least $10 with Amazon in the first place. If you’re already committed to spending that with Amazon, then it’s probably worth the effort. Otherwise it’s one of those spend-to-save offers that you can just avoid.

When you complete your purchase you’ll be given a link to pass to friends. If at least three others also buy into the deal via your link, you’ll get your card for free. I’m a sucker for shameless viral marketing/free stuff so here’s my link. If you’d rather not click it, the link at the top of the post goes directly to LivingSocial without any affiliate nonsense.

(If you can’t see the offer after successfully registering, click the “more deals” link and then click on one of the other cities–that worked for me.)
