“Mariette in Ecstasy” by Ron Hansen
In rural New York state in 1906, a seventeen-year-old girl girl named Mariette enters the Our Lady of Afflictions convent as a postulant, and quickly becomes the center of attention when she begins to exhibit stigmata—spontaneous bleeding from the body in a pattern that mimics Christ’s wounds.
The writing is sparse but lush, so be sure you check out the preview to get a sense of the tone—it’s quite beautiful, but reads almost like a prose poem in parts.
